Russian 9/11 monument will not be moved

BAYONNE — Frank Perrucci, chairman of the September 11th …Bayonne Remembers Committee, the group partly responsible for bringing the Russian monument to the victims of the attacks on September 11, 2001 to Bayonne, was notified this week that the monument will not be relocated from its current location in Harbor View Park.
Gov. Christopher Christie notified Perrucci this week that the monument will remain where it is.
“To Struggle Against World Terrorism” is a 100-foot high monument by world-renowned artist Zurab Tsereteli and a gift to the United States from the people of Russia, featuring a single silver tear which – according to Tsereteli – is shed perpetually for the victims of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
Last July the Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority voted to approve the sale of three development districts on the former Military Ocean Terminal to the Port Authority of New York in New Jersey in which Harbor View Park is located. Moving the monument was a condition of the sale. It is unknown how the decision will affect the sale. – Al Sullivan
