RUTHERFORD – The American Cancer Society (ACS) and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) will host a legislative breakfast to discuss palliative care on Wednesday, April 22 beginning 8 a.m.
Palliative care is specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. It is provided by a team of doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals working together with the patient, his/her family and caregiver. The team works with the patient to control pain and other symptoms, understand the patient’s goals, and explain treatment options so the patient can choose what is best.
It is a proven approach that provides an extra layer of support for people of any age and at any stage of a serious disease such as cancer, and can be provided alongside curative treatment. Palliative care focuses on treating the disease while also ensuring the best possible quality of life for the patient. ACS CAN supports having 100 percent of New Jersey health care facilities offer palliative care. Currently only 80 percent offer palliative care.
The event will take place at the Renaissance Meadowlands Hotel, 801 Rutherford Ave., Rutherford, NJ. It will feature Dr. James Oleske of Rutgers NJ Medical School; Geraldine Cruz, MSN, RN, CHRN, CCRN Director of Palliative Care, Trinitas Regional Medical Center; Chaplain Sue Eberhardt, Director of Pastoral Care, CarePoint Health, Christ Hospital; Assemblywoman Shavonda E. Sumter; Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi; and David Woodmansee, National Associate Director, State Legislative Campaigns, ACS CAN.
