Port Authority police arrest armed turnstile jumper

Dashawn J. Jordan, 24, of Newark, was arrested for allegedly jumping the turnstile at the Journal Square Path Station at about 4:15 p.m. on Nov. 5 and for allegedly being in possession with an illegal handgun that was armed with hollow-point bullets.

Two Port Authority Police Officers in plain clothes said they saw the two suspects go through the turnstiles without paying the fare. They ordered the two men to stop. One did. The second, Jordan, allegedly ran to catch the departing train.

Veteran Port Authority Police Officer Jamie Oliva pursued the suspect down to track 4, and located the suspect hiding between two train cars. The officer then noticed a bulge in the suspect’s right front sweatshirt pocket. Oliva reached in the suspect’s pocket, disarming him. The officer recovered an RG23 .22 caliber revolver, loaded with hollow point bullets. Both suspects were placed under arrest. A computer check showed that both suspects were the subjects of multiple warrants.

Jordan was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Prohibited Weapons and Devices, Theft of Services and Resisting Arrest.

St. Anthony High School gets contribution from Power Survey Company

Saint Anthony High School announced it has received a $150,000 donation from Power Survey Company, a leading service provider to the electric utility industry. With this gift, Saint Anthony has now exceeded its fundraising projections for 2016. The donation is one of the three largest gifts ever received by Saint Anthony High School.

The school announced in September a significant financial shortfall and warned it may have to close at the end of this academic year unless it raised between $10 million and $20 million to establish an endowment for the long-term sustainability of the school.

Saint Anthony President Bob Hurley informed the Board of Trustees that the Power Survey contribution puts the school far ahead of its 2016 projections, and gives the school additional time to continue adding to and exceeding the short-term immediate goal, while also focusing on the long-term goal of an endowment for the future.

“This contribution shows great confidence in Saint Anthony, and what we strive to accomplish,” said Mr. Hurley. “Power Survey Company’s generosity is greatly appreciated and shows how the company’s executives value a quality inner-city Catholic education. We are thrilled to be able to continue the work that the staff and faculty do every day to improve the future of young people in urban areas.”

The Saint Anthony High School Trustees will continue working with the Archdiocese of Newark on the school’s fundraising efforts. Donors may mail contributions to Saint Anthony High School, 175 Eighth St. Jersey City, NJ 07302.

Jerry Walker inducted into Seton Hall University’s Entrepreneur Hall of Fame

Jerry Walker of Team Walker was inducted into Seton Hall University’s Stillman School of Business 11th Annual Entrepreneur Hall of Fame on this week at the Maplewood Country Club in Maplewood.

Star basketball player Walker has won a few sports awards for his alma mater, Seton Hall University, including Big East Tournament Championship in 1992-93. Two decades later, Walker is still winning awards at Seton Hall only this time the award is for his entrepreneurial spirit as president and CEO of the nonprofit organization Team Walker, a year-round social service center for children and teens in his hometown of Jersey City.

“I’ve received a lot of awards, but this one is very special to me,” said Walker. “To be recognized for my business acumen in addition to all the work we do for the kids in Jersey City is especially sweet.”

Special guest and master of ceremonies, Ray Hoffman, host and producer of WCBS-880 CEO Radio, interviewed Walker recently for his series on entrepreneurial CEOs and their business practices. The timing of the entrepreneurial award and radio interviews coincide with the 20 year anniversary of Team Walker, whose mission is to give kids a safe alternative to city streets.
