September will be busy at the Jersey City Free Public Library

JERSEY CITY – A very full menu of programs and events is planned for September at the Jersey City Free Public Library.
The library’s 8th annual book festival, “Tales of Our Cities 2016,” gets underway Sunday, Sept. 25, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine at Van Vorst Park in Downtown Jersey City. Readings will be delivered by 26 authors, and the day will include activities for children and food trucks.

MILLER BRANCH LIBRARY TEEN CENTER

The Miller Branch Library Teen Center is at 489 Bergen Ave., (201) 547-4551, and was founded to enrich the lives of Jersey City teens by offering a comprehensive program to include quality leisure, social, and educational services in the form of both drop-in and organized activities for parents and teens ages 13-18.

Jersey City Library Literacy Program, 1st floor, 472 Jersey Ave., (201) 547-4518, for age 16 and up: Classes in Basic Literacy and Citizenship for ESL Conversational English speakers. The Literacy Program provides one-on-one basic reading instruction for Hudson County residents 18 years and older. Volunteer tutors work with students ranging from non-readers through the eighth grade level. The program also offers citizenship, English as a Second Language, math, public speaking, and writing classes, and TASC high school diploma test preparation classes. Intermediate and advanced. ID, income verification and address proof required.
At Cunningham, for all ages, ‘By Hook or By…’ knit and crochet club with Jean Hartzog. Saturdays Sept. 10 and 24 at 1 p.m.
At the Five Corners branch , 678 Newark Ave., (201) 547-4543, for children, young adults, and adults, on the last Saturday of each month: Knitting for Good. Students will learn how to make a striped bookmark for themselves and a scarf which will be donated to the homeless of Jersey City. Knitting needles and some yarn will be provided. Or, you can bring your own worsted weight yarn (no novelty yarn). Class size is extremely limited. Pre-Registration is required. Oct. 29, Nov. 19 and Dec. 17, 10 – 11:30 a.m. All children (ages 8-11) must be accompanied by an adult who can help them. Adults do not need to know how to knit before attending the class.

At Marion, for everyone, “Crash My Library” is an opportunity for those who have been inspired by the Jersey City Free Public Library or any library to come in unannounced and share your story of how your library has inspired you.
Also at Miller, for adults, Tuesdays, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and Wednesdays, 6 – 7:30 p.m., Basic Skills Computer Classes. Instructor: David Stevenson. Learn everything from turning a computer on to basic navigation of the web. Laptops are welcome. Class schedule and registration at the Miller Computer Learning Resource Center (2nd floor). Space is limited, so sign up early. For everyone, Basic Spanish Made Simple. Mrs. Vilma Gomez instructs, Wednesdays at 4 – 6 p.m.
