Library closing early on June 24

Summer Green Health Fair on June 21

Mayor Nicholas A. Sacco, the North Bergen Health Department, and the North Bergen Municipal Utilities Authority invite residents to attend the Summer Green Health Fair on Saturday, June 21 from noon until 4 p.m. at the 64th Street field.
There will be blood pressure screenings, diabetes and cholesterol screenings, animal care education, bicycle and car safety, live music, face painting, arts and crafts, adopt-a-pet, and much more.
“Go Green” – leave your cars home and walk. Rain date is Sunday, June 22.

Registration opens for Summer Fun 2014

Mayor Nicholas Sacco and Commissioner Hugo Cabrera invite boys and girls ages 6 through 12 to take part in the Summer Fun 2014 program, which will run from June 30 to Aug. 1 (Monday through Friday) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Registration will begin on Wednesday, June 18, at the North Bergen Recreation Center, 6300 Meadowview Ave., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This program is open to North Bergen residents only. You must bring a birth certificate, proof of residency, and $50 cash/money order. No personal checks.

Pool open daily beginning June 28

The North Bergen pool, located at 2111 91st St., will be open every day for the season, beginning on Saturday June 28. The hours of operation are Monday to Friday from noon until 8 p.m., and on weekends and holidays from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.
The pool is open only on weekends until June 28, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

‘Universal Class’ database provides 500 online courses for free

The North Bergen Library is pleased to announce the addition of the new “Universal Class” online database. Located on the home page of the library website, the database provides access to over 500 online non-college credit courses, including continuing education courses. All courses are open and free to North Bergen Library card holders.
An account with a North Bergen Library card and a valid e-mail address are required to sign up for courses. Participants can enroll in up to five courses at a time and have up to six months to finish each course. Access to courses is available 24/7 via the Internet so you can attend class and complete assignments on your schedule. Each course has an instructor who is available to contact via e-mail.

Science Fair at Robert Fulton School is on June 17

Students in grades 7 and 8 at Robert Fulton School will display projects at a Science Fair to be held on Tuesday, June 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the school gym. Students were asked to choose an experiment from any area of science and create a display outlining the steps of the scientific method. The Robert Fulton School is located at 5211 Columbia Ave.

Noted actors present short stories at the library

The hit public radio series and podcast, Selected Shorts, presents extraordinary performances of classic and new short stories. On Tuesday, June 24, the program crosses the Hudson with moving and unexpected tales of friendship, falling in love and complicated families, performed by an all-star cast: Keir Dullea, Patricia Kalember, and Kaneza Schaal.
The three featured speakers will be reading different short selections to the audience. The event will take place at the North Bergen Free Public Library, 8411 Bergenline Ave., on June 24 at 7:30 p.m. Registration is required. PERC flea market on June 21 will benefit the needy

The Palisades Emergency Residence Corporation (PERC) will hold a flea market on Saturday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Lots of items will be available for sale, including new and gently used clothing, toys, kitchen items, housewares and more. Cash and credit cards are accepted.
All proceeds will benefit the programs at PERC, including emergency shelter for homeless individuals and families, the food pantry, soup kitchen, and children’s programs.
The flea market will take place at 111 37th St., Union City, right off Park Avenue, in the community dining room next to the PERC thrift shop.

Make a SPLASH! Volunteer to clean up

On Saturday, June 21, Hackensack Riverkeeper will hold their annual SPLASH event. The event, sponsored by Toyota, is conducted annually in support of the National Waterkeeper Alliance. It features a public clean-up held on the Hackensack River at Laurel Hill Park in Secaucus. The clean-up will be conducted via canoe and on foot.
Immediately following the cleanup will be the Hackensack Riverkeeper’s Informal Potluck BBQ. Hackensack Riverkeeper will provide the hamburgers, veggie burgers and hot dogs. Volunteers are asked to bring sides, drinks, anything that can be grilled (almost anything…) and whatever else may be found at a BBQ: corn on the cob, shish kebabs, vegetables, salad, chips, dessert, etc. Listen to free live music by Frantic while you enjoy your BBQ.
The clean-up will take place from noon to 4 p.m. at Laurel Hill County Park on New County Rd., with the BBQ to follow. Hudson County Patriotic Home Contest now taking submissions

The third annual Hudson County Patriotic Home Contest invites you to run the grand old flag up the pole, dust off the Statue of Liberty, get George and Abe on the porch, put some stars in your windows, and place the Liberty Bell on the lawn. It’s time to show off your pride in America.
Tweet three photos of your decorated home and address to JCHudsonmedia or e-mail them to jctalking2000@yahoo.com. Three grand prize winners will each receive $500 cash.
All photos must be received by June 27. Be creative. Last year more than 50 homes were entered in the contest.

Third-Tuesday-of-the-Month Bird Walk is Tuesday

This free two-hour guided nature walk will take place at Laurel Hill County Park in Secaucus on Tuesday, June 17. Participants will meet at the big parking lot by the Laurel Hill ball fields at 10 a.m. and look for common ravens, shorebirds, herons, nesting ospreys, and more. The walk is sponsored by the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission (NJMC) and the Bergen County Audubon Society (BCAS). Check meadowblog.net for last-minute weather updates. Summer Solstice Celebration Seniors Program will be June 19

Celebrate the longest day of the year – the summer solstice. On Thursday, June 19 at 7 p.m., join a discussion about why the solstice is so long, and enjoy sun tea, cookies, and a surprise craft or two. Bring your grandchildren. Pre-registration is required.
