Helping those in need

Hudson County Sheriff Frank X. Schillari’s said his office collected more than 7,000 blankets, one pallet of dog and cat food, 1,000 sweatshirts, 500 flashlights and other supplies from local Hudson County businesses to aid in the relief efforts of those affected and displaced by Hurricane Sandy.
“Our thanks go out to the Hudson Business Community who so generously donated the supplies, storage and transportation to my office to be distributed among the relief shelters in the area,” said Sheriff Frank Schillari. ”It is in these times where we come together to help out neighbors, family and friends.”
The Hudson County Sheriff’s office will be delivering the donated relief supplies to local shelters that have been set up throughout the county to provide assistance to those that have been displaced. Donations were received from Pacific Links, The Onyx & Brees Foundation for the Welfare of Animals, and Tally Trucking.

BEOF, UNICO co-sponsor Thanksgiving feast

Reservations are available for a community Thanksgiving dinner to be sponsored by the Bayonne Chapter of UNICO National and the Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foundation (BEOF). The dinner is for those Bayonne individuals and families who do not have anywhere to go for the holiday. The dinner will take place on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Back Bay Gardens, located at 535 Avenue A.
Mayor Mark Smith said, “I would like to thank UNICO and the BEOF for working together on this event. Both groups have organized separate Thanksgiving dinners in the past. This dinner is a sign of Bayonne’s generosity in the Thanksgiving season.” He continued, “All residents should be proud that the Bayonne Chapter of UNICO and the BEOF respond to genuine and continuing community needs each year. We should all thank the BEOF staff and the UNICO members for providing this outstanding community service.”
Tickets will be available at the BEOF’s main office at 555 Kennedy Boulevard, and at the nutritional programs at 535 Avenue A and 16 West Fourth Street. Pick up tickets by Friday, November 16. For information, call Lori at the BEOF at (201) 437-7222, ext. 13.
Mike Masone of UNICO will serve as Head Chef.
The BEOF is Bayonne’s community action agency. UNICO is a non-profit service organization associated with the Italian-American community.

Toy drive at Masonic Lodge

Team Bayonne will be hosting a toy and food drive at the Bayonne Masonic Lodge on Dec. 7 from 6 to 10 p.m. to help benefit needy people in Bayonne, including those who have suffered as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
People are encouraged to bring a new toy and/or non-perishable food items.
The event will include food donated by San Vito, which is co-sponsor. There is a $20 suggested donation and checks should be made out to the Team Bayonne Charity Fund.
