Like most events slated for Halloween week, the traditional Hoboken Ragamuffin Parade was postponed. The parade, which is usually held on the afternoon of Halloween, had to be put off two weeks until this past Monday. Despite the delay, turnout for the parade was high and the weather was agreeable.
Parents and children lined up around Washington and Thirteenth streets. Crowds tacked themselves on all the way down to Fifth Street. Children were finally able to trick-or-treat along the way at many businesses on Washington including Bagels on the Hudson and Benny Tudino’s. The faces of local kids lit up as they anxiously filled their plastic pumpkins.
Those who wished to participate in the costume contest met at the Hoboken Little League Field after the march. Local children’s entertainer Ron Albanese, a.k.a. Polka Dot, hosted the contest.
Children in various age categories won dozens of medals and gift certificates, given out by Director of Cultural Affairs Geri Fallo.
During the parade, city spokesman Juan Melli said, “The Ragamuffin Parade was one of the things that would help bring some normalcy back to Hoboken.” Judging by the scores of smiling faces, it appeared that way.
