Man drowns in Lincoln Park pond

A man, whose name has yet to be released, died after being found in the Lincoln Park pond on Oct. 12. He was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Tree mapping party begins on Oct. 16

Sustainable Jersey City is hosting a tree-mapping event on Sunday, Oct. 16 starting at 9:30 a.m. the group will meet at the Southwest corner of Hamilton Park to begin to identify the species, condition, and location of every tree in Jersey City, one neighborhood at a time.

Free test prep for police exam

Mayor Steven M. Fulop, the Jersey City Municipal Council, the Jersey City Police Department and Puertorriqueños Asociados for Community Organization (PACO) announced that free test prep courses for the upcoming New Jersey state police exam are being offered as part of the administration’s ongoing recruitment effort to ensure that the Police Department reflects the diverse Jersey City community.
The three-day preparatory course will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Oct. 18, 19, and 20 at Ferris High School, 35 Colgate St. Students taking the course are required to attend all three nights, as each day will cover different materials.
The courses, which normally can cost upwards of $500, are being offered at no cost. The instructor, retired Jersey City Police Officer Frank Molina, Jr. along with his father has been teaching the course for more than a dozen years.
Following the police exam, the Jersey City police recruitment office will begin working on applicants with the physical fitness preparation, such as running, pushups, and other physical exercises and readiness required for the police academy.

NJCU lecture series features Leigh Anne Tuohy

The New Jersey City University (NJCU) Center for the Arts and the National Society of Leadership and Success welcome the community to a live speaker broadcast on Tuesday, Oct. 18 with Leigh Anne Tuohy, the inspiration behind the New York Times number one best-seller and Academy Award nominated film, “The Blind Side.”
Ms. Tuohy’s lecture on “The Power of Lifting Up Others” will be held at 7 p.m. in The Skyline Room at the NJCU School of Business, which is located in Harborside 2 at 200 Hudson Street in Jersey City. Man dies after being thrown from motorized bicycle

Local bicyclist Guillermo Lugo Librado, 38, has died as a result of being from his motorized bicycle after crashing into a pedestrian on Oct. 3 on Orient Drive. Librado, who was not wearing a helmet, struck someone getting in a car and then hit his head on the street. He was pronounced dead on Oct. 4.
