We’d like to take this opportunity to advise the public about an incident that occurred on Monday, December 11 in the evening. While walking through various neighborhoods and inspecting the progress of the automated parking facility that is under construction at 916 Garden Street, we witnessed fire and smoke erupting from a public mailbox at the Southeast corner of 9th and Garden Streets.
As the mailbox and its contents continued to burn, we quickly called the Hoboken Fire Department, who responded very shortly to extinguish the fire with a special chemical. They deserve high praise for their quick efforts.
If any resident believes that they may have deposited mail in that mailbox from noon on that date until about 8 p.m., please know that several pieces of mail were partially burned and returned to the sender but, according to the post office, several pieces of mail were destroyed.
Residents may wish to check with the post office for further information or check to see whether bills that were paid via mail actually arrived at their destination. Please call Tom Corrado of Hoboken’s main post office at 659-3220 for more information.
