No teachers’ contract is a disgrace

To the Editor:

Here are three statements universally accepted:

1) Parents want the best for their children
2) The key to success is a fine education
3) The teacher is the most important integral aspect in the learning process.

All this is mentioned against the background of Bayonne being a large, urban, and diverse community. Some would believe that these characteristics are obstacles to a thorough and efficient education. Needless to say, our K-12 faculty would declare this to be an utter falsehood.
Bayonne students achieve. On one hand, there are acceptances to prestigious universities with millions of dollars of scholarships earned. On the other hand, there is a miniscule dropout rate, and 100 percent meet the PARCC graduation standards. The result is low unemployment, and a high quality of life is maintained.

A former member of the Board of Education used the word “disgrace” in reference to another situation. After five years without a teachers’ contract, a brief settlement, and now more years, I believe the same word is applicable here. It is therefore important to remove negative activity, partnerships, and personalities from the negotiations. To borrow words from another source: Bayonne Parents/Children/Teachers Strong.
