LIVE / DEAD BALL

QUESTION: In high school volleyball, Team (A) hits ball which contacts the net antenna and passes completely within net and over into opponent’s side of court. Live or dead ball?

ANSWER: Dead ball. Net antennas are considered out of bounds (Rule 9, Sec. 3, Art. 3, a).

QUESTION: On the second hit by Team (A), the ball hits the ceiling on the side of Team (A) and continues over the net onto the court side of Team (B). Live or dead ball?

ANSWER: Dead ball; loss of rally / point and serve awarded Team (B). If ball hit ceiling on Team (A)’s first or second hit and remained over own team’s court side, ball would remain in play. If ball contacted ceiling on third hit be Team (A), ball would be declared dead with same penalties. (Rule 9, Sec. 3, Art. 3).
