Teen rescued from well at Jersey City Heights reservoir

JERSEY CITY – Firefighters helped rescue a 16-year-old boy from a fall into a 30-foot hole at the Summit Avenue reservoir on May 10.
Although technically closed to the public except for fishing at one area, the reservoir is a popular hangout for teens, who often climb over the fence to access the more remote, overgrown areas. The pump house area is adjacent to Pershing Field complex where many teens play sports. But the area is also popular for students from the nearby middle school.
The teen, along with two other friends, apparently were in the abandoned pump house that overlooks Summit Avenue when the plywood covering the hole fell. The boy landed in water and kept afloat until firefighters could bring him to the surface.
The teen was transported to Jersey City Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries.
