HUDSON COUNTY — According to Hudson County Office of Emergency Management, elevated fire weather potential exists through much of the day Wednesday, April 20. Due to an extremely dry air mass with minimum relative humidity values of 20 to 30 percent, lack of rain, mild temperature, and wind gusts, there is high potential for a fire.
In similar circumstances yesterday, two massive brush fires started in the Meadowlands in Secaucus and Kearny around 12:30 p.m. One occurred in a marsh area near Secaucus Road and Penhorn Avenue in Secaucus. The three-alarm fire was fought by several departments, including the Secaucus Volunteer Fire Department. The cause is still unknown but a cigarette is suspected, according to officials.
Gonnelli and officials said at least 10 acres of land burned, but there was no property damage. Around 3:30, the fire was under control, Gonnelli said.
