HOBOKEN – Emerge New Jersey, a “national network” across 15 states to encourage women to run for office, will honor Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer at its first annual “Building The Bench Breakfast” on Tuesday, May 3.
Emerge NJ will honor four women “for their efforts in building the bench of democratic leaders in their communities and around the state,” the organization said in a press release. The other women being honored are Sonia Delgado of Princeton Public Affairs Group, Lillian A. Plata of McManimon, Scotland & Baumann, LLC and Ginger Gold Schnitzer the NJEA Governance Director.
Zimmer, who was elected as the first female mayor of Hoboken in 2009, recently said she plans to run for a third term. She has boasted of helping to raise the city’s bond rating in order to reach financial feasibility to seek an array of improvements to the city and spearheading flood protection measures.
On their website, Emerge NJ says that “in the 235 years since its statehood, New Jersey has elected a total of 5 women to the U.S. House of Representatives, 0 women to the U.S. Senate, and 1 women as Governor of New Jersey. Of 120 State Legislators, only 35 are women.”
