Fulop rethinks Jersey City casinos

JERSEY CITY – After meeting with Atlantic City officials, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said he is rethinking his proposal to bring a casino to Jersey City.
“The mayor initially considered that the financial benefit of the casino and job creation could help to lower taxes for residents but has since spent time exploring in more detail communities that have hosted casinos in the past,” said Jennifer Morrill, spokesperson for Jersey City. “These conversations have caused the mayor to entirely reconsider whether we need or want this casino in Jersey City. Part of leadership is being willing to adapt and be flexible based on community feedback which is the priority here. Engaging with Jersey City residents and Atlantic City residents has caused the mayor to walk back his support for this project.”
Fulop in an email blast confirmed this possible change of direction.
“I believe a component of leadership is being able to listen to feedback, being willing to learn more about an issue, and being willing to admit when you may be on the wrong side of that issue,” he said. “This past week, I spent the day with leadership and community members in Atlantic City to learn more. I have spoken to Jersey City community members and casino operators, but I think I need to still learn more on this. For the last year, I have been on record as a strong advocate for a casino in Jersey City. However, after listening to the Jersey City community, I have taken a step back and leaning in the exact opposite direction that this may not be a positive for Jersey City. I’m not so sure I have been in the right place on this one and am interested in more feedback from Jersey City residents.”
