Hoboken Volunteers

Dear Editor:
As Executive Director and Founder, I would like to extend a gracious thank you on behalf of Hoboken Volunteers, to our volunteers, patrons, partners, contestants, judges, and sponsors for supporting our 7th Annual Chili Cook-Off & Homebrewing Contest.
On February 20, 2016, over 300 people gathered at the Our Lady of Grace gymnasium in Hoboken to sample chili recipes from 18 competitors, and beer from 11 local home brewers. We were able to raise $10,000 for Hoboken non-profit organization, TRUE Mentors, Hoboken’s only one-on-one mentoring program for children ages 7-17. Under the direction of Board President, Jen Johnson, TRUE Mentors helped make this event a true success. It was an absolute pleasure working with the team, who were involved with planning, coordinating, and promoting the event.
Michael Blumenfeld’s Bangkok Blast took home the trophy as Chili Cook-Off Champions winning 1st place in the judge’s competition while 2nd place went to Chili Willy, and 3rd place was awarded to Solid Vikes. Net Flex & Chili won the honor of Fan Favorite.
Die Brewing was crowned Homebrew Champions winning the best judged homebrewing contest for their Single IPA, followed by 2nd place for a Belgian White IPA from Beardman, and 3rd place for a French Saison from Die Brewing. The Fan Favorite was awarded to Lackawana.
We’d like to thank our panel of chili judges – Mayor Dawn Zimmer, owner of Tony Boloney’s, Mike Hauke, and Pitmaster at House of Que, Mike Rodriguez. Also, we are thankful to our homebrew judges – Paul Maute, Jared Bruno, David Mace and Mike Mautivote.
A special thank you is owed to our sponsors this year: hMAG, Hoboken Grace, Ben & Jerry’s, Don’t Sit Home, Inserra Shoprite and 902 Brewing Company.
Thank you to Our Lady of Grace for the venue and all of the generous local businesses who donated gift certificates to the winners.
Again, our utmost appreciation for your support and generosity in helping us raise community awareness and funds for TRUE Mentors. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

Most sincerely,
Tim Occhipinti,
Founder of Hoboken Volunteers
