Oil leak in Bayonne park worse than originally thought

BAYONNE – Tens of thousands of gallons of oil have leaked into an eastside city park, much more than the 3,000 gallons reported earlier in the week, according to a television news website.
Original reports of the leak at Halecky-IMTT Park on East 27th Street had 3,000 gallons of oil collected. Now, about 40,000 gallons of a mixture consisting mostly of oil has been collected, News 12 New Jersey reported on Feb. 25.
The leak was first reported to authorities on Monday, Feb. 22.
The oil is from an underground pipeline no longer in use.
State officials said that the oil had not seeped into any waterways and was not a threat to the public, multiple news agencies reported.
International-Matex Tank Terminals Inc., a storage facility for petroleum, chemical, and other products, owns the pipeline.
