Knights Rally Behind Cohen, Cifuentes for OT Win

After falling 3-1 to the Wizards in their 2016 JCC of Bayonne’s Jr. Division indoor soccer debut, the Knights set their sights on regrouping as they face the Dragons. Things got out to a dicey start for the Knights as the Dragons’ Thomas Arias pummeled the Knights defense for four unanswered goals with Joyce Gabrael (3) and Anthony Baez (1) on the assists. Rocked back on their heels, the Knights turned up the heat to take a 5-4 advantage as Chase Cohen (3 goals, 1 assist), Aaliyana Cifuentes (2 goals, 1 assist), Ryan Divan (1 assist), and Michael Cordero (1 assist) led the surge. With their lead in crumbles, the Wizards benefited from a free kick as Arais netted his fifth goal with just 29 seconds remaining to force an overtime shootout. As both squads missed their first attempt, the Knights’ second try connected as Michael Cordero hit his mark. Not to be outdone, the Wizards’ Thomas Arais blistered in a scoring strike. Seizing the moment, the Knights’ Ryan Divan ended the bout with a pin point net jet as the Knights went to (1-1) with a 7-6 overtime win. A special mention must be given to the Knights’ Anthony Fraser for his tenacious effort on defense while the Wizards’ Brenden McCall and Amy Gabrael also stepped up when the game was on the line.
