SERVE AND SPIKE

SCORING POINTS

QUESTION: In high school volleyball, how many points must be scored to determine the outcome of a set? (21, 25 or 30)
ANSWER: All sets shall be 25 points using rally scoring system which means a point is scored each time a violation occurs by either the serving or receiving team. (Rule 1, Sec. 3, Art. 2).
QUESTION: If a squad is playing with only five players and the vacant position comes time for serve, is the position just skipped over without penalty? Can a set continue with less than six players?
ANSWER: A team needs six players to start a set. If a player is injured during a set and a team has no subs, team may continue with only five players. A loss of rally/point is awarded each time the vacant slot rotates to serve. Offending team loses serve and opponent is awarded a point as well as serve. (Rule 1, Sec. 3, Art. 1 & 3; Rule 6, Sec. 2, Art. 1 & 2).
