The city of Hoboken recently announced a wide range of summer activities for residents with everything from outdoor theatre events to concerts in the park and movies under the stars.
“Summer is here, and we are again pleased to offer a wide variety of free outdoor recreation and cultural activities,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer in a mailer that went out to residents last week. “I hope you enjoy your summer and take advantage of all that Hoboken has to offer. I look forward to seeing you at our events.”
Recreation
There are a number of athletic clinics taking place this summer as well as more relaxed opportunities like swimming and “Mommy and Me Yoga.” Tickets are $25 for each clinic.
A baseball clinic for kids aged 6 to 12 will take place on the Little League Field, Fifth and Hudson streets, from July 7 to Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for ages 6 to 9, and 10:30 a.m. to noon for ages 10 to 12.
A basketball clinic will take place from June 24 to July 31 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at various courts around town. For seven year olds, classes will take place on Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. at the courts at Second and Adams streets. For older kids, classes will take place on Tuesdays (8 to 9 years) and Wednesdays (10 to 12 years) from 6 to 8:15 p.m. at Church Square Park.
There will also be instructional tennis, gymnastics, lacrosse and soccer clinics. The swimming pool at the Boys & Girls Club on Jefferson Street will be open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for kids aged 5 to 12.
Yoga is making a big splash in Hoboken this summer, with three different activities available to residents. First, Yoga on the 12th Street Pier will take place on Wednesdays until Oct. 4, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., and Saturdays until Sept. 24, 7 to 8 p.m. Prices for those classes range from $9 to $15 per class.
Yoga for young and old
Sunrise Express Yoga will take place at Pier A Park on Mondays and Wednesdays in July and August, from 6:30 to 7:15 a.m., and costs $25 for six sessions.
Finally, Mommy and Me Yoga will take place on the same days at 9 a.m. for kids 2 to 6. Classes will be adjusted for different age groups. The cost is $25 per session.

The arts
Whether you’re a natural performer or more comfortable sitting in the audience, there are a number of ways to enjoy arts, music and theater in Hoboken this summer.
Art In The Park, a six-week creative arts program for children aged four or younger, will take place throughout the summer in different parks at different times. Pier A Park sessions will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays, starting June 16, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Elysian Park sessions will take place, starting June 17, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you want to catch a theater performance but don’t feel like going through the hassle of crossing the river to New York, check out Storybook Theatre at Elysian Park. Presented by Tempest Productions, free lunchtime performances will take place on Saturday afternoons from 1 to 3 p.m. starting on June 14. This summer’s repertoire includes “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” (June 14), “The House on 88th Street,” (July 12) and “Something Whistling in the Night: Folktales From Other Lands” (Aug. 9).
There will also be free performances in the Sinatra Park Ampitheater, Sinatra Drive between 4th and 5th streets, by Mile Square Theatre (“A Midsummer’s Night Dream” at 8 p.m. from July 11 to 27, check out www.milesquaretheatre.org) and Shakespeare in the Park (“Cymbeline” on July 14 and 21, and “Pericles” on Aug. 11 and 18, all at 7 p.m., www.hudsonshakespeare.homestead.com.)
Free concerts will take place in Sinatra Park throughout the summer from 7 to 9 p.m. The annual Sinatra Idol contest took place on Thursday, June 12, but there’s still time to catch the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra at Pier A Park on Thursday, June 19 at 7 p.m. Local favorites will be featured throughout the summer, with the Karyn Kuhl Band taking the stage on June 26, Julio Fernandez & Friends on Aug. 14, and Swingadelic on Aug. 21.
Special events
If you don’t have kids or live-action performances aren’t your thing, there’s lots more to do in Hoboken this summer.
The city shows free outdoor movies on Wednesday evenings at Pier A Park, First Street and Sinatra Drive. The “Movies Under the Stars” series has become very popular. Movies begin at 9 p.m. in June and July and around at 8:15 p.m. in August. Movies this summer include “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” (June 18), “Saving Mr. Banks” (June 25), “American Hustle” (July 9), “On The Waterfront” (July 16), “The Hunger Games” (July 23), “E.T. The Extraterrestrial” (July 30, “Despicable Me” (Aug. 6), “The Lego Movie” (Aug. 13), and “Frozen” (Aug. 20).
Other events include the annual “Spaghetti Dinner Block Party” on Aug. 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets already went on sale June 10 at City Hall in the Cultural Affairs office, second floor. Tickets are $20 per adult, $10 for children under 12, and $200 for a table for 10.
