Doyle, Nowak playoff stars for Devils

With their regular season highs and lows left in their wake, the (4-4) Devils and the (1-7) Islanders put all their hopes in capturing a playoff victory and a chance to play for “Gold” in the JCC of Bayonne’s Floor Hockey Sr. Division. Playing with a sense of urgency, the Islanders took a 1-0 lead as Jared Radil assisted Malachi Smith on his 11th goal of the season. The Islanders’ narrow lead was soon extinguished as Jake Nowak (2 goals, 1 assist), Megan Feeley (1 goal, 1 assist), Ryan Giocoli (1 goal), and Alejandro Cifuentes (1 assist) rocketed the Devils out to a 4-1 lead. After a tripping penalty, the Islanders cashed in with a rare short-handed goal as Logan Mazziota made it a 4-2 contest with a scoring dart. With the Islanders back in the hunt, the Devils’ Ryan Giocoli blasted a bullseye shot from half-court to stun the Islanders’ fired up defense. Down 5-2, the Islanders’ Drew Radil kept things interesting as he nailed a goal to make it 5-3 with just under 10 minutes remaining. With all their firepower on display, the Islanders went on an all out blitz with Chloe Gregory, Jake Peregrin, John Bautista, and Natallyah Teixera each putting shots on net but the Devils’ rock solid goal guru, Matt Doyle, stood the test. The Devils finally wrapped up a 6-3 victory when a race-off win by Jan Patrick Egan set up Elliott Santana’s pinpoint pass to Jake Nowak who notched his 24th goal of the season with an open net dagger.
