Zanowic endorses Mayor Smith ticket
Former mayoral candidate Anthony Zanowic endorsed Mayor Mark Smith on Friday, May 16, in his race against Police Capt. James Davis in the municipal runoff on June 10.
“Mr. Davis’ promise to settle the teacher contract without explaining how he would pay for it is fiscally irresponsible and would cost the average taxpayer over $1,100 a year in higher property taxes,” Zanowic said in a statement. “Mayor Smith cares about our taxpayers and is being fiscally responsible with our money.”
Zanowic urged his supporters to vote to re-elect Smith and his team in the runoff.
Smith thanked Zanowic for his support, saying the endorsement was “an important step forward toward our goal on June 10.”
“Anthony Zanowic is a good man who loves our city and I appreciate his endorsement very much,” Smith said. “Above all else, Anthony speaks out for taxpayers, and we are both committed to efficient, affordable government.”
Because of Zanowic’s presence in the May 13 regular election, neither Smith nor Davis could reach the 50 percent plus one vote needed to win outright in the contest.
Winners announced in Peace Cup Fishing Tourney
The winners of the Peace Cup Fishing Tourney held from May 3 to May 16 out of the Elco Marina in Bayonne were announced over the weekend, according to spokesman Manoj Jacob.
First place went to Luise Araujo of Newark for a striped bass catch of 38 and a half inches and 23 pounds. Araujo received $3,000.
The second place winner was Niina Takahashi of Nanuet, N.Y., for a 37-inch, 17-pound catch. Takahashi received $1,500.
Third place honors went to Megumi Watanabe of Elmwood Park for a 36-and-three quarter-inch, 16.6-pound catch. Watanabe received $500.
All three also received fishing rods and trophies.
Fourth, fifth, and sixth place winners were Jaga Gavin of North Carolina (36.5”/19.5 lbs.), Kwang Soo Lee of Leonia (36.25/18), and Younhwan Yoon of Wayne (36.25/17), respectively. All three received trophies.
Kennedy Boulevard fire displaces several residents
A two-alarm fire at a Kennedy Boulevard residence on Friday, May 16, displaced as many as 12 people and forced them to seek shelter, a fire official said. No injuries were reported.
The Bayonne Fire Department had responded to 444 Kennedy Blvd. on reports of a fire at the two-and-half-story frame building.
Firefighters were confronted with heavy smoke and flames coming from the first floor windows, according to Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.
Firefighters extinguished the fire and were able to stop further spread to the upper floors. The fire caused substantial damage to the first floor. The upper floors were damaged by smoke and heat.
Firefighters called for Red Cross officials to assist in providing shelter for the displaced tenants.
The fire, that appears to have originated on the first floor, is under investigation, Rogers said.
Bridgemen to host tournament on June 21
The Bridgemen Drum and Bugle Corps of Bayonne will host its 9th Annual Tournament of Stars on Saturday, June 21 at Don Ahern Memorial Veterans Stadium at 6 p.m.
Corps competing in the event are Fusion Core, the Hawthorne Caballeros, and the Cadets2. Corps performing in the exhibition portion will be The Raiders, Skyliners Alumni, Hawthorne Cabs Alumni, and Bridgemen Alumni.

Volunteers wanted for Hudson Medical Reserve Corps
If you would like to volunteer during public health emergencies and natural disasters in Hudson County or elsewhere, the Hudson Regional Health Commission (HRHC) Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is looking for you.
MRC units are made up of locally based volunteers. They include medical and public health professionals such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, mental health professionals, dentists, veterinarians, and epidemiologists. Other community members, such as interpreters, chaplains, office workers, and legal advisers, fill vital support positions.
Volunteers give a minimal amount of time and have the choice to respond locally only or to be deployed outside the county.
Volunteers participate in various trainings and drills throughout the year, enhancing their preparedness skills and heightening their ability to respond to many different types of events.
Hudson County’s Emergency Management, police, fire, EMS, and public health professionals say more help is needed.
