Woods, Mickiewicz key in Penguins victory

It was supposed to be a toe-to-toe Sr. Division brawl for the JCC of Bayonne’s (1-0) Devils and the (1-0) Penguins as they faced off in a Floor Hockey duel, but that was not in the cards. The bout started off as expected with the Devils skillfully netting a goal as Ryan Giocoli zipped a pass to the waiting stick of Megan Feeley for an early goal and 1-0 Devils’ lead. With the Devils whipping passes all over the court, it seemed to be just a matter of time before they cashed in again but that second goal never materialized. With all their bricks in place defensively, the Penguins started their offensive attack as Josh Greenbaum made it 1-1 scoring off an assist by Marek Mickiewicz. Moments later, Mickiewicz made it 2-1 Penguins with a wrist shot as Cee Jay Larino picked up an assist. The Devils did have some brief scoring opportunities as Jake Nowak, J. P. Egan, Megan Feeley and Alejandro “See Ya Cifuentes each put shots on net but the Penguins’ Colin Woods foiled every scoring plot. As frustration mounted for the Devils’ offense, Elliott Santana and Matt Doyle did their best to keep the relentless Penguins’ offense at bay. Going into the final 10 minutes stretch, the game stayed close until the Penguins began to pull away as Mackenzie Woods (2 goals), Cee Jay Larino (1 goal), Josh Greenbaum (1 goal), James Bajor (1 assist), and Marek Mickiewicz (3 assist) put together a 4 goal blitz to take a commanding 6-1 lead. As time ticked away, the Devils tried to gain some offensive footing but once again defensemen Julian Giron and James Bajor stepped up for the Penguins to secure a somewhat surprising 6-1 victory.
