HUDSON COUNTY – The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said that service on the Journal Square-33rd Street line has resumed near normal operations after a minor dispute among three passengers resulted in a non-fatal shooting incident at the Newport Station early Sunday morning.
Trains are still skipping the Newport stop, however, as the investigation continues.
According to the Port Authority and several news accounts. the incident took place at around 5:30 a.m. Sunday morning when two passengers, a man and a woman, allegedly got into an argument as the Journal Square-bound train entered the Newport stop. The man allegedly pulled a gun and shot the woman. This allegedly caused a second man traveling with the woman to allegedly pull his own gun and allegedly fire at the first alleged shooter.
It remains unclear whether all three people involved were injured or the woman and one man.
Port Authority police have arrested the alleged first shooter, a 34-year-old from East Orange, and have charged him with two counts of aggravated assault and weapons charges.
