Heavyweight boxing contender Tomasz Adamek, who still trains in downtown Jersey City, won last Saturday in his return to the ring, his first fight in seven months.
Adamek handily defeated Dominick Guinn in a 10-round decision at the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut, a fight that was televised nationally on the NBC Sports Network.
It sets up Adamek on his road to getting another shot at the heavyweight championship of the world sometime next year. Before that, he’s going to have to get past undefeated Bryant Jennings in a fight that should be televised on HBO in November.
What makes that fight rare is that both Adamek and Jennings are from the same promoter, namely Main Events. Mostly fighters from the same promotional company stay away from each other, but this is a Main Events card that is apparently unavoidable.
Adamek is also managed by Ziggy Rozalski, the owner of Ziggy’s Auto Body in downtown Jersey City and the gym where Adamek regularly trains…
Speaking about training, former Hudson Reporter Male Athlete of the Year Mike Brown, the former St. Peter’s Prep football and baseball standout, has a new fitness facility in New York.
Brown, who went on to play football at the University of Virginia, is the proud owner of NYC AGAPE, which specializes in couples training, bridal boot camp, group training, personal training and pre-and-post-natal training.
The couples training program received rave reviews recently in the New York Post, stating that couples who train together stay together. It’s definitely a novel approach to fitness.
The programs at NYC AGAPE are based on strength and conditioning with boxing, cross training and speed endurance featured.
Located at 600 Washington Street in lower Manhattan, you can check out the website at www.nycagape.com…
Former St. Peter’s University assistant basketball coach John Coffino has taken on a new coaching challenge. Coffino is off to become the head coach and assistant director of basketball operations at Dankind Academy in Kenya.
Coffino is excited about the opportunity and says that there is a ton of basketball talent in Africa….
Last week’s Tidbits featured the three Hudson County products currently in the NFL who have hit major road blocks with their off-the-field antics. It apparently touched the nerve of former St. Peter’s Prep and Boston College standout Pedro Cirino.
In a series of e-mails, Cirino was angered because he didn’t get the chance that these other three have received.
Cirino was very close to making it. After his standout career as a safety at Boston College, he was invited to participate in the NFL Players Combine in Indianapolis, but went to the combine with a severely injured hamstring.
Cirino was timed in the 40-yard dash and did not produce a time like he did when he was healthy. It prohibited Cirino from getting selected in the NFL Draft and the injury limited him when he got a free agent chance with the New York Jets.
Just like that, Cirino’s professional football career was over, after apparently having all the tools to make it. Cirino would have loved to have the opportunity that the other three now have. It was great to hear from Cirino, who really was one of the best all-around football players ever produced at Grand and Warren…
