North Bergen swears in six new police officers
Mayor Nicholas Sacco, Public Safety Commissioner Theresa Ferraro, and Police Chief Robert Dowd welcomed six new officers to the North Bergen Police Department on Monday, June 1. The swearing in ceremony was held in the commission chambers at Town Hall on Kennedy Boulevard.
The new officers are: Jason A. Castillo, 28; George J. Dabal, a sanitation employee at the North Bergen Municipal Utilities Authority; Melissa J. Gonzalez, 25, an NBPD dispatcher; Christopher Orellana, 34; Michael C. Rivetti, 29, an asset protection manager for K-Mart; and Jonathan A. Sinchi, 23.
The six recruits will enter the Union County Police Academy on July 19 and will assume active duty upon graduating.
Ribbon-cutting ceremony opens Pool Spray Park
Mayor Nicholas Sacco, Township Commissioners and other local officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony that officially opened the newly renovated North Bergen Pool Spray Park on June 26.
Located at 2111 91st Street, the Spray Park gives children a place to splash, play, and cool off during the summer while their families visit the township’s pool complex.
Along with the renovated Spray Park, the township also recently completed construction on a new outdoor shelter at the pool, complete with solar roof panels. The structure will be used for parties and other pool events.
‘Time Machine’ to play Guttenberg
The Town of Guttenberg will host “Time Machine” as part of its Summer Concerts for residents on Thursday, July 18 at 7 p.m. between 70th and 71st Streets on Boulevard East.
Spanish and Computer Training sign ups at North Bergen Library
Conversational Spanish and Basic Computer Training are two of the many courses offered this summer at the North Bergen Library.
Registration is under way for those and other courses, which will run from July 8 through Aug. 23.
Conversational Spanish introduces students to the basics of communicating in Spanish. It will be held on Mondays & Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Basic Computer Training teaches the fundamentals everyone needs to know to use a computer. It will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 1:30 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 1:30 p.m.
The summer offerings are open to North Bergen and Guttenberg residents. Interested parties should register in person, and must bring proof of age and residency.

CASA seeking volunteers to help children
Hudson County CASA (court appointed special advocate) is recruiting volunteers to assist in advancing the interests of abused and neglected children.
An information session will be held Tuesday, July 9, from 6 to 7 p.m., Room 400, at the Hudson County Administration Building, 595 Newark Ave., Jersey City.
CASA and its volunteers speak for children in court, serve as fact finders for judges, and advocate for children while they are in the foster care system.
