JERSEY CITY AND HOBOKEN – Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fulop and the Jersey City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) announced that the city would open two cooling centers and two senior centers for Saturday, July 6, and Sunday, July 7.
The two community centers are the Mary McLeod Bethune Community Center, 140 Martin Luther King Drive and the Pershing Field Community Center, Pershing Field Complex (corner ofSummit Avenue and Pershing Field Plaza). Both locations are open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. for residents to cool off.
The two senior centers are the Joseph Connors Senior Center (Paterson Street Center), 28 Paterson St. off of Central Avenue and the Maureen Collier Community Center, 335 Bergen Avenue between Ege and Virginia Aves. Both locations are open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
Several libraries are open with extended hours. And three pools will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.: Pershing Field, Lafayette, and Pavonia.
In Hoboken, the city opened a cooling center in the ground floor conference room of City Hall, 94 Washington St., from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 7. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory through Sunday evening.
Sprinklers and water features are also available for cooling off at Church Square Park, Jackson Street Park, Madison Park, Elysian Park, Stevens Park, Pier A, Pier C, and Columbus Park.
Residents are urged to check on their neighbors, especially the elderly and those with disabilities.
