Richie Havens dies at home in Jersey City

JERSEY CITY AND BEYOND — Folk singer Richie Havens, who was famous for opening the Woodstock festival, died Monday at home in Jersey City. Havens, 72, lived in Jersey City and New Orleans.
Havens was born in Brooklyn in 1941. He was the first act at Woodstock. Scheduled to play four songs, he ended up continuing well past his original set.
Havens had played locally in recent years, including at the Hoboken Art and Music Festival. For related links, see below.
