Holiday Hudson Reporter advertising deadlines
Because of the Thanksgiving Day holiday, some of the Hudson Reporter newspapers will have special advertising deadlines.
For The Secaucus Reporter, The North Bergen Reporter, The Union City Reporter, The West New York Reporter, and The Weehawken Reporter, the deadline for classified and display advertising is Tuesday, Nov. 22, at noon.
The Hoboken Reporter and The Jersey City Reporter, the deadline for display advertising is Wednesday. Nov. 23,at noon.

Proposed uptown development to be heard by county Planning Board in December
The proposed addition to the uptown Shipyard Development in Hoboken will be presented to the County Planning Board on Dec. 21, rather than the planned hearing for this past Monday night, according to a representative from the county. The item was tabled from the agenda until next month.
The plan must also be approved by the Hoboken Planning Board, according to officials.
The proposed development will be built on an inland pier. The area was designated in the Hoboken Master Plan as an area for open space, but has not yet been zoned that way.
The property is privately owned by Ironstate Development. Michael Barry, the president of the Ironstate, said in early October that their proposal will comply with all of the city’s open space requirements, and that his company will do what it can to minimize interruptions to the lives of the people in the neighborhood.
The Hoboken City Council voted 8-0-1 on a non-binding resolution opposing the development in October. The meeting was packed with residents from the Hudson Tea Building, who feared their views of Manhattan would be partially blocked.
The proposed development has received opposition from several city officials, including Mayor Dawn Zimmer. However, in October, Barry said he hoped there would be more communications.
“It’s not fair for the city to say ‘We envision your privately owned land for a park’ without any negotiations,” Barry said in an earlier story.
Hoboken to hold final hearing about closing three post offices
Three out of four Hoboken post offices may be closed as part of proposed budget cuts to the U.S. post offices nationwide. On Tuesday, Nov. 22, local officials plan to attend a hearing to keep the local post offices open. They are asking residents to attend.
The hearing will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. at the main post office in town at 89 River St.
A press release from council members Michael Russo and Tim Occhipinti said that they, along with Assemblyman Ruben Ramos, want to stop the Westside Post Office on Grand Street from closing. They noted that many senior citizens live in the area.
The United States Postal Service has been holding hearings at the main post office, informing residents of their intentions to close the other three postal branches, two uptown and one downtown, ultimately leaving only the main branch open. Tuesday’s hearing is the final one.
The press release said, “The Westside postal station located on Grand Street is a very busy branch and is the only post office on the Westside which serves three senior citizen buildings, Church Towers, and many older residents of Hoboken. The post office is also utilized by many of the new residents who have home offices and rely on the post offices nearest to them in order to send and receive packages.”
Mother of Hoboken councilman hired by UC school board
After months of rumors about politically connected Hoboken resident Michele Russo possibly getting a local government job, she was hired late last month to work for the Union City Board of Education — despite the fact that the state censured her in 2002 when she was a Hoboken Board of Education member.
This past July, a county government source told the Reporter that Russo, who has run the Hoboken Democratic Party in the past and is the wife of former Mayor Anthony Russo, as well as the mother of current Hoboken Councilman Michael Russo, was up for a county job.
However, Michele Russo ended up not getting that job. Rumors said that after it was reported in the media, county officials changed their minds — but that she was up for a job in Union City instead.
On Oct. 27, the Union City Board of Education voted to hire Michele Russo for a $45,000-per-year job as administrative assistant for the medical department.
Critics of Union City Mayor Brian Stack have often said that the city’s school system has been used as his patronage mill, since he appoints the Board of Education members. Stack’s spokesman, Mark Albiez, said Thursday, in response to this hiring and another employee matter at the same board meeting: “The Board of Education is independent of the city of Union City. The mayor does not have the authority to engage in [their] hiring processes.”
Third Annual Hoboken Family and Friends Thanksgiving Dinner set for Nov. 22
Two free Thanksgiving dinners will be served on Nov. 22 for senior citizens and for the public housing community at two different locations. The senior dinner will be from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Multi-Service Center at 124 Grand St. The rest of the public-housing community will be served from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the community room at 221 Jackson St.
The meal, to be catered by Hashway’s Deli of North Bergen, is paid for by a coalition of concerned citizens who chipped in donations to ensure Hoboken’s seniors and lower-income residents have a place to go for a good Thanksgiving meal, according to a release.

The menu will be as follows: roasted turkey breast with gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn, cranberry sauce, and for dessert, they will serve rice pudding.
The dinners are presented by Hoboken Housing Authority Commissioner Jake Stuiver, in conjunction with Mayor Dawn Zimmer, Hoboken Health and Human Services Director Leo Pellegrini, Housing Authority Executive Director Carmelo Garcia and ROSS/Resident Service Coordinator Luis Acevedo.
