A mass of Christian burial was offered Oct. 22 at St. Aloysius RC Church for Thomas Canavan, 76. He passed suddenly at his residence on Oct. 18. A native of Ardmore, Connemara, County Galway, Ireland, Tom was a long time resident of Jersey City. A carpenter by trade, he was a member of Local 608 of the Carpenter and Joiners Union in New York for many years. Tom was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians as well as a member of the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. Surviving are his siblings, Sally Mc Keown of Fanwood, Brigid Bornstein of Connecticut and Michael Canavan of Jersey City. He was predeceased by his companion Margaret ‘Cissie’ O’Connell and his siblings in Ireland. Tom also leaves behind several nieces and nephews as well as the O’Connell children and grandchildren.
