John R Muniz of Jersey City NJ Receives New York Humane Service Medal for New York Guard Service During Hurricane Irene
New York Guard Capt. John R Muniz a resident of Jersey City, NJ (07307) has been awarded the New York State Humane Service Medal for his service in New York’s response to Hurricane Irene.
The award recognizes service in response to members of New York’s Organized Militia who who distinguished themselves by sustained meritorious service in a humane operation as a result of a natural disaster, such as floods, snow storms, hurricanes, tornados, and acts of mercy during State Active Duty service at the direction of the governor.
Muniz was one of almost 140 members of the New York Guard who responded when Governor Andrew Cuomo activated the New York Army and Air National Guard and other components of the New York Military Forces when Hurricane Irene threatened the state on August 28.
The New York Guard is New York’s volunteer uniformed state defense force. Members normally perform their training in an unpaid, volunteer status.
