Washington Street named ‘Top 10 street’ in nation for 2010

The American Planning Association (APA) announced the designation of Washington Street in Hoboken as one of 10 Great Streets for 2010 under the organization’s Great Places in America program. APA Great Places exemplify exceptional character and highlight the role planners and planning play in creating communities of lasting value, according to a city release.
The APA singled out Washington Street for its affordable housing options, and the city’s diligent efforts to preserve the street’s historic character through design guidelines and adaptive reuse. Additionally, the street stands out for its unique sense of place, including views of the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline.

Causes of Sinatra Drive collapse emerge

The collapse of Sinatra Drive North near 14th Street was caused by a combination of factors: the construction of the road on an old wooden deck, soil erosion, a break in the bulkhead, and shipworms, according to Mayor Dawn Zimmer. The county has become very active in the road repairs because Sinatra Drive is a county road. More news is expected on Monday regarding the collapse. Stay tuned to HudsonReporter.com for updates. Fund-raiser to benefit food bank

The Essex County Bar Association Young Lawyers Section & the honorary chairman, County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. are hosting a Food-Raising event at the Turtle Back Zoo Carousel, Northfield Ave. West Orange, to benefit the Community Food Bank of New Jersey. Adult contribution is $10. Musical entertainment provided by Brandon Sheer along with Manny Scarpinato and Joey Jarroush. Unlimited carousel rides and complimentary child identification cards provided by the New York Life Insurance Company. Canned foods will be accepted. Please, no glass containers. Date: Saturday Oct. 23, 6-8 p.m. The Community FoodBank of NJ serves the following food pantries/programs in Hudson County: Old Bergen Church in Jersey City, Palisade Emergency Residence Corp. in Union City, Holy Redeemer Church in West New York, and Gospel Tabernacle Church in North Bergen.

Hoboken resident thankful to Reporter readers

I n the Sept. 26 issue of the Hoboken Reporter, a call for assistance was placed by Hudson Street resident Rachel Simons, whose sister Ariel Simons currently serves in the Peace Corps. Ariel lives in Lesotho, an impoverished area in South Africa. She needed books to help build a library for school children in Africa.
Rachel said in an e-mail that in the weeks since the request was published she has received an “overwhelming response from the community.”
According to Rachel, Ariel and the Peace Corps may be able to build more than one library with all of the books they have received.
Rachel thanked the Reporter readers for their generosity.

The 30th Annual Artists Studio Tour on Nov. 6 and 7

On Saturday, Nov. 6 and Sunday, Nov. 7, from noon until 6 p.m., Mayor Dawn Zimmer, The City of Hoboken, The Hudson Reporter, and the Hudson County Division of Cultural & Heritage Affairs will present The Hoboken 30th Annual Artists Studio Tour, a free self-guided walking tour of artists’ studios, galleries, and community exhibition spaces. The tour takes place all throughout Hoboken, at spots that include The Monroe Center.

Annual Hoboken Historical Museum House Tour takes place on Oct. 24

On Sunday, Oct. 24, up to 10 local homeowners will open their doors to the public in this year’s Hoboken Historical Museum House Tour. The self-guided tour, which starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m., offers a fresh selection of traditional and contemporary homes and condos furnished in a wide range of styles.
This year’s tour includes a rare treat: a former sweets factory loaded with architectural details. This home is a reminder of Hoboken’s rich heritage as a center of food production, which is the focus of the Museum’s 2011 main gallery exhibit.
The event is a fundraiser for the Hoboken Historical Museum, and also brings visitors from out of town to see how Hoboken has changed while retaining much of its unique character. Report: Hoboken to lose Macy’s studio for Thanksgiving Parade

According to the Associated Press, Macy’s is moving its studio where the floats and balloons are built from Hoboken to Moonachie. A Macy’s executive said the parade just outgrew the Hoboken facility, according to the report.

United Synagogue of Hoboken’s Star of Israel to be rededicated on December 5th

Hoboken’s Jewish community will rededicate the historic Star of Israel synagogue during Hanukkah, the holiday that commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in ancient Jerusalem. The rededication will take place at the United Synagogue of Hoboken, 115 Park Ave., Hoboken, on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010 at 4 p.m. A menorah candle lighting and presentations about the synagogue’s story will highlight the ceremony.
