OPPIDO, FR. HAROLD J

A mass of Christian burial was offered Oct. 5 at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, Jersey City, for Fr. Harold J. Oppido, 84. He died Oct. 2, at Christ Hospital in Jersey City. Fr. Oppido was born and raised in Brooklyn where he attended Brooklyn Prepatory School. He entered the Society of Jesus at St. Andrew on the Hudson, Poughkeepsie, in 1942. He studied Philosophy and Theology at Woodstock College in Maryland. He was Ordained in 1955. Like most Jesuits, Fr. Oppido started his active ministry in the classroom. He taught Latin, Greek and English at his high school alma mater until 1972 when he joined the faculty at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City. There he taught Latin, Greek, Theology and the classics and also served as a guidance counselor. He was a beloved colleague at both schools and within the Jesuit Community because of his professionalism and sense of humor. It was commented that when he arrived at St. Peter’s Prep, he quickly became legendary. His classes were great fun and you learned a lot. He is survived by his sister Mary Oppido, nephew Vincent Oppido and niece Florence Abate and his colleagues and friends throughout the Jesuit Community. Services arranged by the McLaughlin Funeral Home, Jersey City.
