ALLEN, DR. RUTH ANDERSEN

Funeral services took place Oct. 7 for Dr. Ruth Andersen Allen, Ed.D. She died on Oct. 4 surrounded by her family. Ruth was a veteran, serving in the Women’s Army Corps., during World War II. She also earned her doctoral degree in 1950 from Columbia University, after first receiving her bachelor’s degree and master’s of science from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. As a professor, she instructed at Jersey City State College, teaching elementary education for 30 years. She was a pioneer in elementary education, personally making major improvements to the curriculum taught in the Nutley school system as well as and other local municipalities. Active in the Calvary Baptist Church in Clifton, she taught Sunday school for many years and was on many committees aimed at both spreading the word of the Lord to other countries as well as locally. Ruth was predeceased by her husband Hugh (1970), and is survived by her children Hugh Allen III and his wife Judy, Douglas P. and his wife Mary Ann, Theresa Allen and Helene Allen. She was the grandmother of Lindsey, Douglas Jr. and Tess. Services arranged by the Collins – Calhoun Funeral Home, Rutherford.
