TURNER, CHARLES

TURNER, CHARLES A. Mass for Charles A. Turner Jr., 82, a native and lifelong resident of Jersey City, was held Oct. 24 at St. Paul of the Cross Church, Jersey City. He died Oct. 19 at Jersey City Medical Center. Turner was a battalion chief in the Jersey City Fire Department for 33 years, retiring 26 years ago. He was also police director of Jersey City from October 1988 to June 1989, and a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was assistant director of the Jersey City Fire Department in 1976, a deputy mayor in the Cucci Administration, a past president of the New Jersey FMBA, disaster center manager for FEMA from 1985 to 1995, and was director of security for Jersey City State College for seven years. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Paul of the Cross Church. Survivors include four sons, Charles I., Christopher J., Joseph R. and Edward M.; three daughters, Barbara Turner Owens, Monica Turner Togna and Veronica Turner McNeil; a brother, Francis Turner; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
