The Little Grocery Café has specialty food, creates party platters

The Little Grocery, 214 Jefferson St., in Hoboken is more than just a grocery store. This cozy café has specialty food items and homemade food that can be eaten on or off the premises. In addition, they have full service catering for parties. For New Year’s Eve, they will be making specialty cheese and dessert platters.

Fabulous food

Owner and chef Neamet Elsayed has years of New York restaurant experience. Most recently, he owned Baladi restaurant in Montclair. In 2000, he was rated by Zagat as one of New Jersey’s top new chefs.

Elsayed cooks with care, preparing the dishes from scratch. He likes to keep his customers happy, so he varies the menu daily.

One of the specialty entrees he makes is a boneless chicken dish that is stuffed with feta cheese, mushrooms and spinach. Another is a ham with a bourbon orange glaze or a roasted turkey with herbs and spices.

A favorite with customers are the signature quiches including: spinach and feta, chicken and artichoke, cream of mushroom, and prosciutto and asiago (a yellow Italian cheese).

Specialty salads and more

They have specialty salads including: a lentil salad that is made with sweet peppers, celery and diced cucumbers; French chicken salad with cranberries; tortellini with roasted garlic and parsley; gnocchi with roasted walnuts, and a sweet couscous salad.

There are made to order salads offered daily like the Little Grocery Cobb salad, Caesar salad, and the house salad with vinaigrette.

The sandwiches can be made with choice deli meat including: Black Forest ham, honey roasted turkey, roast beef, and Genoa salami. All of the sandwiches are made on the customer’s choice of multi-grain bread or roll and condiments.

Cheese platters and desserts

Each of the platters contains a sampling of fine cheeses, olives, fresh and dried fruit, condiments and crackers. The cheeses are selected from around the world and are aged in the caves at the Artisanal Cheese Center in New York City.

The price for platters starts at $35 and serves four to six people.

For dessert, they have homemade brownies, bread pudding, scones, and assorted pastries of they day. Pastries start at $1.50 a piece.

The shop serves breakfast egg sandwiches and French Toast ($2 – $3.50) and coffee, cappuccino and espresso all day.

In addition to the delicious homemade foods, they have a full line of imported mustards, pickles, olives, crackers, spices, cookies, ice cream and more for take-away.

The Little Grocery is open seven days a week from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Delivery is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or available for pick-up at any time. A catering menu can be tailored to your budget and size needs.
