Introduction: A year of tears and heroes

The day the World Trade Center collapsed, Hudson County was full of heroes. Besides the emergency services personnel and volunteers who tended to victims, there were the towns that opened their arms to refugees fleeing the destruction – the people of Weehawken who manned ferries and emergency shelters; those in Hoboken who gave directions to powder-caked New Yorkers trekking to the train station trying to get back home; those in Jersey City who tended to the wounded at Liberty State Park; those in businesses, agencies and households in West New York, Union City, North Bergen, Guttenberg and Secaucus who leant equipment and time, who prayed, who offered to donate blood. There were artists and children in every town who raised money and expressed themselves to help others cope.
