Dear Editor:
I am writing today about my strong opposition to the nomination of John Ashcroft as Attorney General of the United States.
Former Senator Ashcroft’s record speaks for itself; it does not justify him becoming the necessary leader for the Department of Justice. His record has demonstrated a failure to the commitment of enforcing the constitution and the civil rights laws, such as: Ashcroft opposed affirmative action measures designed to remedy present and past discrimination; he vigorously opposed efforts to desegregate St. Louis’ public schools; he rejected Bill Lan Lee to be Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights because of Mr. Lee’s support for affirmative action; and he vetoed bills as Governor that would have made it easier for citizens of Missouri to register to vote.
I urge the United States Senate, particularly, U.S. Senator Robert Torricelli of the State of New Jersey who is a member of the Judiciary Committee of the Senate to vote “no” for Ashcroft! Former Senator Ashcroft becoming the U.S. Attorney General would be a detriment to civil, human and voting rights of All-American citizens.
