Hoboken Board of Ed. unanimously approves new superintendent contract

HOBOKEN — The Hoboken Board of Education finally has their new superintendent of schools.
Dr. Mark Toback, the current superintendent of Sussex County Vocational School District, is coming to Hoboken after he provides 60 days’ notice to his current employer. The board voted unanimously on Tuesday evening to approve Toback’s contract to pay the new superintendent an annual salary of $155,000 with a $2,500 stipend because the district has a high school, bringing the total pay to $157,500. That amount is exactly the amount of the proposed cap from the state for a district this size, until July 1, 2015. The contract also includes 5 incentive-laden bonuses which could bring the salary to approximately $180,000.
Board Vice President Theresa Minutillo called the agreement a “contract we can be proud of” and said the approval from the Essex County superintendent allows Dr. Toback to give notice to his current district.
Board President Rose Marie Markle said her family took her phone away from her at one point because the process was such a time-consuming part of her life.
Though the board may have not been happy with the long process due to restrictions in pay for superintendents from the state level, the members seemed relieved that they were able to hire Toback.
“I’m just thrilled that it’s over,” said Board Member Carmelo Garcia. “We went the 12 rounds.”
