Hoboken residents chime in on uptown park designs

HOBOKEN — The steps toward two new uptown parks are underway.
Approximately 60 members of the public gathered on Monday evening at the Rue School with city directors to provide input about the future of 1600 Park and Hoboken Cove, two uptown park locations near the Weehawken/Hoboken border.
Director of Community Development Brandy Forbes said on Tuesday that the meeting was the first step of seeing what the public wants for the uptown locations. The next step is for the city to create a stakeholder group, which will discuss and advise as to what the community is interested in seeing developed at the two uptown locations which will be designed by Remington and Vernick.
“We can take a look at what’s feasible and what’s not,” Forbes said. “We will keep people in the loop on what’s going on.”
Some public comments asked for practice fields for recreation teams, using trees instead of planters, non organizational play areas, a strong irrigation and draining system, full service bike lanes, and one resident even suggested that Hoboken have a meeting with Weehawken to “create a holistic design” of the Hoboken Cove area. – Ray Smith
