Driving into poles, running in circles
A Cliffside Park resident was arrested last Sunday when he not only allegedly drove away after police pulled him over, but then crashed his car into a light pole and allegedly ran away from the cops, who were forced to tackle him to the ground.
Edward Colon, 23, was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, failure to exhibit license, insurance, and registration documents, eluding police, resisting arrest, and speeding.
According to Commander of the Detective Bureau Lt. Frank Cannella, Colon was pulled over on Jan. 30 at 3:12 a.m., along with another driver in a black Chrysler, by Officer Brandon Vilchez on Tonnelle Avenue near 63rd Street.

Vilchez followed Colon, who attempted to make a left turn onto 51st Street, but instead struck a light pole. Cannella said that Colon then exited the vehicle and was allegedly “verbally abusive” to the officer.
He allegedly said to Vilchez, “What the [expletive] is up, I ain’t doing nothing wrong [expletive],” said Cannella.
“Colon was [allegedly] swaying back and forth with bloodshot eyes,” said Cannella, who said Vilchez suspected him of driving while intoxicated.
At gunpoint, Vilchez ordered Colon down on the ground and to place his hands behind his back because he was being arrested. When Vilchez holstered his weapon in order to place handcuffs on Colon, the arrestee allegedly took off running on foot on 51st Street to Liberty Avenue, before running down 52nd Street back to Tonnelle Avenue, where Vilchez caught up with Colon and tackled him to the ground.
Cannella said that Vilchez subdued Colon with pepper spray in order to handcuff him. He was arrested and placed in the back of a police car, where police said he banged his head into the divider several times. He also allegedly continued to scream and curse at the officers.
After being processed at headquarters, North Bergen EMS arrived and transported him to East Orange Hospital, the hospital under contract when a prisoner watch is needed for more than eight hours, for medical attention.
He was later released and cleared for incarceration at Hudson County Jail. Judge Nino Falcone set his bail at $7,500 with no bail bond option.
Cannella said there was a female in Colon’s car who was “an unfortunate person in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
NB woman caught up in prostitution case
According to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Mariana E. Caranza, 55, of North Bergen, was arrested on Jan. 26, along with 12 other individuals at various hotels in Paramus, for prostitution-related offenses.
The hotels were allegedly being used for an “in-call” prostitution business. The customers were driven to the location, where rooms were allegedly paid for by the prostitution operation, so they could engage in sexual acts with a prostitute in exchange for money.
Along with Caranza, Javione J. Lessane, 35, of Hoboken, was also arrested.
Through other investigations, a total of 36 individuals were arrested on prostitution-related offenses throughout Bergen County over the last few weeks, announced Prosecutor John L. Molinelli.
