Irish eyes – and ears – are smiling

Weehawken celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with traditional music from the green isle

If you ask Kathy DeAngelo and Dennis Gormley what the state of traditional Irish music is today, they would tell you it’s alive and well – and that’s thanks in part to the husband and wife themselves, the musicians of traditional Irish group McDermott’s Handy.

The musical duo, who has been performing in the greater Tri-State area for 30 years, brought their show to the Weehawken Public Library for a special St. Patrick’s Day concert on Wednesday.
Billed as a “living memorial” to Ed McDermott, a fiddler from County Leitrim who emigrated to America in 1915, McDermott’s Handy is a sort of “do it all” duo.
At last week’s library celebration they shared Irish favorites using the Celtic harp, fiddle, flute, guitar, mandolin, banjo, bodhran, tin whistle, bouzouki – and of course, singing.
