NORTH BERGEN AND BEYOND – While several Hudson County towns will get more school funding from the state as a result of a state Supreme Court education funding decision made Tuesday, State Sen. Nicholas Sacco, who is also mayor of North Bergen, did not laud the judgment the way other local legislators did.
“This decision will throw New Jersey back into the past by effectively reviving the Abbott district system,” he said. “During the Corzine administration, the legislature created a far fairer system where money would follow economically disadvantaged students, regardless of where they live. But this ruling negates all of that, returning us to a situation where poor children throughout the state who don’t happen to live in certain areas are sold out once again. I think it’s a travesty.”
Sacco’s town will not get more funding as a result of the decision. Hoboken, Union City, West New York, and Jersey City will.
