Trial of former Secaucus Mayor Elwell gets late start

SECAUCUS AND BEYOND — The trial of former Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell was delayed somewhat on Monday morning. Elwell was among those arrested in a 2009 FBI sting operation in which a government informant posing as a developer offered money to politicians in exchange for favors.
Elwell stands accused of allegedly taking $10,000.
Monday morning, Elwell’s lawyer, Jeffrey Garrigan, asked for another day to review documents associated with Ronald Manzo because the government wanted to call him as the first witness, something they decided only over the weekend. Manzo pleaded guilty last month to taking the money from the government witness, which then allegedly was supposed to be passed to Elwell.
The results of Garrigan’s request will be known later.
The proceedings are taking place in federal court in Newark.
