Hoboken mayor: FBI said no more information should be provided to council about investigation

HOBOKEN — Mayor Dawn Zimmer, in a memo to the City Council, said the Federal Bureau of Investigation doesn’t think the city should disclose any more information to the council about the ongoing criminal investigation into a potential breach of the city’s electronic communications.
The memo from the mayor comes on the heels of Council President Beth Mason scheduling a special council meeting for Monday, June 13, at 7:30 p.m. to address the ongoing investigation in executive session. The meeting is expected to go forth as planned on Monday evening, according to one source on Sunday.
Zimmer’s memo to the council indicated that she spoke to the FBI directly on Friday, and she said in the memo that it was her understanding that the FBI believes if any more information is provided, the investigation could become compromised.
FBI agents were seen in late May removing computers from the City Hall third floor Information Technology office. After the agents had removed computers, the city released a statement, indicating that Zimmer’s office called the FBI “as a result of compromised security in the electronic communications within the city.”
Sources on both political sides have speculated what the investigation is about, but City Hall has not released any further information.
In the letter from Mason to the City Clerk’s office that called for the meeting, she said that the council may vote on two resolutions, depending on how much information they receive from the city attorney.
One resolution would be to “command the appearance of officials or employees of the City…to fully advise the City Council about the aforementioned matter” and another would be to adopt a resolution “directing that ‘Rice Notices’ be issued to certain employees of the city of Hoboken.” Rice Notices tell employees that their personnel matters are about to be discussed and offer them the right to request a public hearing.
