Weehawken mom charged with child abuse

Tamara Reyes, 37, of Jefferson Street in Weehawken was charged last week with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and child abuse, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.
Reyes allegedly abandoned her injured child near Weehawken High School on June 10. Last week DeFazio said that the baby was not found on the steps of Weehawken High School as initially reported but rather face down on a sidewalk near the curb in front of the high school.
The baby remains hospitalized. DeFazio said its injuries may have occurred from being tossed from a vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.
“It’s been ascertained that the injuries were due to blunt force trauma,” DeFazio said.
Investigators have thus far found no indication of long-term abuse and at this point they say the injuries appear to be recently inflicted.
DeFazio said that Reyes appeared in Central Judicial Processing Court on Wednesday and is currently in custody at the Hudson County Correctional Center.
The most serious charge that Reyes faces is aggravated assault, a second degree crime that could lead to a maximum of 10 years in state prison, at least 85 percent of which would have to be served.
The baby and Reyes’ other underage child are currently in the custody of the Division of Youth and Family Services. She also has another child who is 19 years old.
Reyes is a special education teacher in West New York and has been suspended by the school district.

Open house to be held at new American Legion building

An open house will be held at the newly renovated American Legion on June 25 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held last week to celebrate the opening of the new building (which is in the same location as the former building, 49th Street and Boulevard East).
The original building, built in 1918, was determined to be ineligible for renovation due to serious structural problems and was demolished last year. The joint project between the American Legion and the Township of Weehawken will also feature a new park for residents.
