Union City police chief, mayor respond to news expose on part-time job

UNION CITY AND BEYOND — On Wednesday evening, New Jersey News 12 aired a “Kane In Your Corner” segment about Union City Police Chief Charles Everett.
The segment said Everett is getting paid by the Union City Board of Education to provide security for the Jose Marti Midtown Complex. The report said Everett is earning $60 an hour for the extra part-time job.
According to the segment, the schedule for this position is 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday nights and from 4 p.m. to midnight on Saturdays.
A videotape shows Everett allegedly arriving late and leaving early. Everett is also seen working out at the police gym, allegedly during the hours he should be at his part-time shift, according to the report.
The Union City School District is an Abbott District, which means it is funded by state taxpayer dollars.
In the News 12 report, Union City Mayor Brian Stack says he was shocked by the report but promised to look into it.
When reached by the Reporter on Thursday, Everett said, “I work the detail. I get paid for it.” He said that any other responses to the report are to come from the city.
This isn’t the first time a news organization has found alleged improprieties in Union City. Earlier this year, Stack’s ex-wife Katia was alleged in a Fox news “Shame on You” segment to have been using a city car and possibly city gas for some personal errands. The car was issued to her for her job running the city’s day care facility. At the time, Stack was also forced to respond to the situation. He said he was “disgusted” by his ex-wife’s actions. Katia Stack eventually reimbursed the city for the gas she used.
