A final tribute to a local hero

To the Editor:
The freedoms we enjoy easily here were protected afar through the ultimate sacrifice of Army Specialist Rafael A. Nieves. We would like to thank all the many people who contributed to the final tribute to our local hero. Our gratitude goes to acting Governor Kim Guadagno, who ordered all government buildings to fly their flags at half staff; to Bayonne Mayor Mark Smith; Bayonne Police Chief Ralph Scianni and his respected officers; Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari and Jersey City Police Chief Thomas Comey and their officers; and the State Police escorts.
In addition, we appreciate the Patriot Guard Riders who voluntarily gave of their time to act as escort for Rafael. They have our gratitude and admiration. To all the local veterans’ organizations who paid their respects to their fallen brother, we thank them. They demonstrate all that is best within our fine Bayonne community. Thank you to the Firemen’s Canteen, who were there as always with care and concern; and to the many representatives of our Armed Forces, not only for their part in this funeral, but for their continued dedication to protecting our liberties at home and abroad: We are ever grateful. Last but not least, thank you to our wonderful staff, who never let us down. You are always most appreciated.
It has been an honor and privilege to have been able to provide our services to Specialist Nieves and his truly wonderful family in recognition of our gratitude to him and all our dedicated service men and women.
