North Bergen will continue annual ‘National Night Out’ celebration

Three block party locations throughout North Bergen have been announced as part of the ‘National Night Out Against Crime’ celebration, which is scheduled to take place Tuesday, Aug. 2.
The planned locations are Grand Avenue between Seventh and Eighth streets, Broadway between 73rd and 76th streets, and 6121-6131 Grand Ave., the site of the North Bergen Housing Authority.
Each block party will feature free food, drinks, and music, and is scheduled to begin at 6 pm. The three locations will be visited by Mayor Nicholas Sacco and other township officials.

Potential post office closings in North Bergen

Over 3,000 post offices across the country face a potential closing in an effort to cut costs, according to a list published by the United States Postal Service.
The USPS could close 50 post offices throughout New Jersey, including two North Bergen offices located at 6139 Kennedy Boulevard and 609 Kennedy Boulevard. Both are on the list of potential closures.

American Red Cross announces Braille transcriber classes

The American Red Cross of Northern New Jersey will offer free classes for volunteer Braille transcribers.
The 20-week course will include a two-hour class and about 12 hours of homework weekly. Upon completion of the course, class members can submit a trial manuscript for Red Cross certification, which will allow volunteers to prepare Braille textbooks for blind children.
The class will be held in two locations. The first will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. at 209 Fairfield Road in Fairfield. The second location for the class will be in North Haledon and begins on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m.
