SECAUCUS BRIEFS

Town prepares for Hurricane Irene

Secaucus is preparing for the worst as Hurricane Irene nears, by setting up shelters, making sandbags available, and making arrangements to move vehicles. Possible shelter locations will include the public library, the Senior Center at 101 Centre Ave., and the Huber Street Elementary School. The town has emergency numbers available on Comcast cable channel 36 and their web site: http://www.secaucusnj.org/. For more information, call City Hall during office hours at 201-330-2000.
Meanwhile, the Federal Emergency Management Agency suggests that residents prepare a basic emergency supply kit. The kit should include one gallon of water per person each day for at least three days, a three-day supply of non-perishable food, a battery-powered radio, a flashlight with extra batteries, a first aid kit, and a dust mask to filter contaminated air.
Other storm safety tips include: Covering your home windows with plywood, bringing in outdoor furniture, trimming trees and shrubs, turning off propane tanks, installing a generator, reinforcing garage doors, and filling large containers with water for supply purposes.

Farmers market gets new location and date

The farmers market gets a “do-over” after an unsuccessful run at Buchmuller Park on Friday mid-afternoons with few vendors. The town of Secaucus has added vendors and moved the Farmers Market to Sunday at the center of town from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The town hopes the changes will bring more people out on the weekend to buy local produce.
